Rabies warning issued for Nakhon Ratchasima village

NAKHON RATCHASIMA -- The provincial livestock office has issued an order prohibiting the removal of living or dead dogs and cats from a Muang district village after an outbreak of rabies was reported there.

Office chief Wimut Thanuthamnok said on Tuesday that pet owners in Ban Nong Bong in tambon Suranaree are required to report any suspect cases of rabies to the tambon chief or a local veterinarian within 12 hours.

Moving any dogs and cats out of the village is prohibited until further notice, the order said.

Owners of animals that die are required to report the deaths to local authorities for verification.  If an examination of the dead animals cannot be carried out within 24 hours, the carcasses must be buried at least 50 centimetres underground.

Dr Theerawat Walaisathien, director of the Nakhon Ratchasima-based Zone 9 Disease Control Office, said a warning has been issued for the people to beware of rabies, particularly during the cold season.
