The Transport Ministry has ordered public and private interprovincial bus services to cut fares by 1 satang per kilometre, not 3 satang as predicted earlier, following a fall in diesel prices.

The new fares will take effect on Feb 15.

Deputy Transport Minister Omsin Cheevapruek said the ministry settled on a 1 satang reduction because it was worried a bigger cut could affect businesses.

The bus operators had already cut fares by 3 satang per km in August 2015.

They complained that despite lower fuel costs reducing overheads, business had been affected by tougher competition  - especially from low-cost airlines -  and their passenger loading had dropped to only 40-50% per trip.
