TRANG – Young residents of Na Yong district are helping keep the neighbourhoods cleaner by painting artwork on rubbish bins to bring more attention to the problem of waste management.

There are 546 children and young adults between the ages of 13 and 25 in six villages of Na Yong Nua who have united for education and activities related to the garbage management. Among them were educational lessons on waste reduction and recycling, garbage sorting and an initiative to paint the tambon's many blue garbage cans.

The group will encourage villagers to sell their trash, which paid by coupons valued from one to 100 baht and usable at participating local shops.

The Na Yong Nua government spent 265,670 baht in 2014 to properly dispose a total of 531.3 tonnes of trash, or around 1.5 tonnes a day. However, officials said, many residents still don't realise the significance mutual and sustainable garbage management so administrators drafted youths into the project.

The "holiday for the community" activity saw children paint about 50 rubbish bins with colourful artwork. Later, more residents took up the task and brought the number of painted cans to 300.

The bins were then distributed throughout tambon Na Yong Nua of Trang's Na Yong district.

Chomya Songsua, of Na Yong Nua local administration organisation, said the activity has encouraged youths to pay attention to the garbage issue and inspired all villages to act collectively to help solve the problem.

She expected that such activities would be run in other areas in order to create a cleaner environment.

The colourful bins are placed in tambon Na Yong Nua of Trang's Na Yong district.
