SURIN -- A pack of big black dogs is preying on young cattle and buffalo, eating the calves' insides and leaving the carcasses in fields at night, according to a member of a local administration.

Pacharapol Pengpinich, 44, of Ban Hua Khao, a member of the Khalamae tambon administration organisation, said he and four other TAO members went into the fields on Monday night to investigate why there were so many dogs barking out there.

They first suspected the dogs were howling because someone was taking them out to a field to kill them.  And then, about 200 metres from the village, they saw a pack of six or seven large black dogs chasing and savaging a buffalo calf.

They were able to save the calf, which was about one month old, but the dog bites had opened many big wounds and some internal organs, including intestines, were poking out,

According to Mr Patcharapol, villagers said this was the eight calf to have been attacked by these black dogs.  On the nights of Feb 6 and 7, the dog pack had attacked and killed seven cow and buffalo calves in villages nearby, tore open their bellies and eaten the internal organs.

Superstitious villagers were saying the dogs could be possessed by evil spirits. People in the area are anxiously preparing to protect their livestock from further attacks at night.
