Young men and boys feel there's nothing wrong with sweethearts enjoying sex together while still studying, but a majority of young females say it is improper, according to a opinion survey conducted ahead of Valentine’s Day.

The pollsters at Bangkok University, or Bangkok Poll, sought opinions from 1,203 young people aged 13-22 years.

They reported that 53.4% of respondents felt premature sex among students was normal, but it must be safe sex. Most who shared this view were male, the pollsters noted.

The other 46.6% of the respondents, mostly female, saw it differently. They felt it was improper for students to have sex.

Of the respondents, 41.1% said they had a sweetheart, 31.5% said they had no one special. The remaining 27.4% said they had no one, but did have their eye on someone.

On Valentine’s Day gifts, 47.5% wanted to go out with their girlfriend or boyfriend, while 33.9% wanted roses. Only 3.7% of the respondents admitted they wanted to have sex on this special day.

The poll found 58.4% said they had a good understanding of sex education, but the rest admitted to having little knowledge of it.

Three out of every five, about 61%, expressed confidence they could control themselves and not have premarital sex while they were students. The others were not so sure.
