Twenty couples, including Thais and foreigners, tied the knot undersea in Trang and others exchanged vows on rafts in Chumphon on Saturday, the eve of Valentine's Day.

Trang governor Detrat Simsiri was among the dignitaries on hand to express best wishes to 20 couples about to take the plunge — literally — at Koh Waen in Kantang district of the southern province.

The couples, together with six registrars with diving skills, attended the traditional Thai wedding ceremony 18 metres deep at the ''Andaman Underwater Train Station". Four couples at a time took part.

After the undersea rituals, the  couples were feted at a party at the Anantara Si Kao Resort and Spa Hotel.

The undersea wedding event, held for three days from Feb 12 to Feb 14, first made international headlines in 1996 and has been attracting diving couples from all over the world every year since then.

In Chumphon, several couples had their marriages registered on rafts along the Phato River. The two-day event, presided over by Chumphon governor Somdee Khachanyangyuen, will wind up today.

Participating couples were taken for a rafting tour along the river and had their marriages registered on the raft. A wedding party is planned in front of the district office.
