Govt steps up plan for international health hub

The government will move swiftly ahead with its policy to promote Thailand as an international health service centre so as to help improve the Thai people's quality of life and boost services for foreigners, government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Sunday.

Maj Gen Sansern the government wants to increase its competitiveness in the health service system because the launch of the Asean Economic Committee has meant more foreigners from around the world heading to Thailand than ever for work, tourism and investment.

Thailand has 50 state and private hospitals with Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation - the highest number in the Asean region.

In 2014 there were 1.2 million arrivals in Thailand for medical services -- the highest number in the world. A Thai private hospital was also ranked one of the top ten best hospitals in the world, Maj Gen Sansern said.

He said the government this year aims to promote and heighten the quality of a total of 172 private hospitals in ten major tourism provinces -- Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Krabi, Ayutthaya, Phangnga and Prachuap Khiri Khan -- and in Tak, Mukdahan, Sa Kaeo, Songkhla and Trat, where special economic zones are located, so that they can receive the JCI accreditation.
