Two university students have been arrested in Bangkok for allegedly selling weapons online, following a complaint that firearms were being sold on Facebook.

Damrong Ounruen and Ms Pitcha-orn Phaetyanont, 21, both university students in Bangkok, were presented at a police media conference on Friday.

Pol Lt Gen Sanit Mahathavorn, acting chief of the Metropolitan Police Burea, said the arrests followed a complaint that a woman and her boyfriend were selling guns and ammunition on Facebook.

A police investigation led to the arrest of Ms Pitcha-orn at a dormitory in Krathumrai area of Nong Chok district. Some bullets were found in her room.

According to police, she said the bullets belonged to Mr Damrong, her boyfriend. She told police he used a residence at a housing estate in Nong Chok area to produce weapons for sale to regular customers.

Police took her to the house and found bullets, handguns and equipment used for making weapons. Mr Damrong was not at the house.

Mr Damrong later turned himself in to Nong Chok police. He said the seized items belonged to him. He admitted he had sold bullets and weapons on Facebook and delivered them by parcel service. He admitted to having done this for three months.

They face charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Police said arresting officers seized  38 items from them - including handguns and more than 200 rounds of .38 and 9mm bullets.

Thai News Agency reported Mr Damrong claimed he ordered materials for producing weapons, and they were delivered by parcel. He also said had read books on how to assemble weapons.

The pair were being held in police custody.
