Wildlife water survey in drought-hit Khao Yai park

A survey of natural water resources is underway in Khao Yai National Park to make sure the wild animals have enough to drink during the dry season, park chief Kanchit Srinoppawan said.

Mr Kanchit said he had ordered officials of Khao Yai National Park - a World Heritage Site straddling Prachin Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Ratchasima and Saraburi provinces - to survey the water  resources in their respective areas.

They are required to report the locations of water resources and the volume of water so the park management can submit a report to the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department for further action, he said.

Mr Kanchit said initial reports indicated there was still sufficient water for wild animals.

Khao Yai National Park usually has sufficient water from rain during the dry season, including during the Songkran Festival.  However, it was not predictable what the situation would be this year, necessitating the survey of natural water resources so that proper preparations could be made as needed, he said.

The Prachin Buri-based Conservation Administration Office of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, on Monday submitted a report on the movements of wild elephants on Highway 2090 and Highway 3077 on Feb 28-29.

Park officials spotted 11 wild elephants on Highway 3077 between kilometres 23-25 around 5.30pm on Feb 28. About 8.35pm a male elephant was seen at kilometre No.37 on Highway 2090.

About 2.30am on Feb 29 a male elephant was seen at kilometre No.43 on Highway 2090. The elephant entered the compound of a park office and tried to break into Wanalee Restaurant, in search of food.  The animal damaged some glass windows before being herded back into the forest by park officials.
