Tsunami warning lifted

The Meteorological Department's Seismology Office has affirmed there will be no tsunami after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday night.

Meteorologist Patinya Pornsopin said the quake’s epicenter did not occur on a fault line and checking of the sea level with Indonesian authorities had confirmed that the incident would not cause a tsunami.

The agency had not announced any warning, he said.

The National Disaster Warning Centre earlier issued a tsunami warning in Thailand but later lifted it.

The Meteorological Department reported the quake happened 10 kilometres underground at 7.49pm.

The quake was located about 800 kilometres southwest of Sumatra capital Padang. Its news caused local people to flee to high grounds for fear of a tsunami.

Tsunami warnings were initially issued to western and northern regions of Sumatra and nearby Australian Cocos Islands and Christmas Island. The warning for Sumatra was later lifted.
