Student, teacher killed, 45 hurt in tour bus crash

KALASIN - A student and a teacher were killed and 45 others on a study trip were injured when their tour bus overturned on a curve while going down a hilly road in Somdet district of this northeastern province in the early hours of Friday.

The accident happened on Somdet-Sakon Nakhon Road at Phu Phan mountain’s Pha Sawoei cliff scenic point in tambon Pha Sawoei, said Pol Sub-Lt Pongpichit Thanapakdi, a duty officer at Somdet police station.

The crash was reported to police around 3.30am on Friday.

The tour bus was carrying students from Dong Mafai Witthaya School in Sakon Nakhon province on a study trip to Buri Ram.

A schoolboy, Kritsada Chaiwanyo, 18, and one teacher, Ratchanee Kerdthawee, 48, were killed and 45 other students injured, police confirmed. The injured were rushed to Domdet Hospital.

Driver Winai Montha, 35, told police that he had tried to slow down several times on the downhill road, but the brakes were ineffective.
