Two executives of Mega Planet Co, which was contracted to install the fire-prevention system at Siam Commercial Bank's (SCB) head office, have been released on bail after being arrested and charged Tuesday, Metropolitan Police acting commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sanit Mahathaworn said.

Managing-director Napong Suksanguan and Adisorn Pokha, a member of the Mega Planet  executive committee, were named in arrest warrants approved by the Criminal Court in connection with the leak of a fire-retardant chemical that killed eight people and sent seven others to hospital on Sunday night.

The two reported to police on Tuesday and were initially charged with carelessness causing deaths and injuries. The Criminal Court granted unconditional bail to Mr Napong and Mr Adisorn Tuesday evening, releasing them for 500,000 baht each.

Pol Lt Gen Sanit said the two expressed regret for what had happened and were willing to pay compensation for damages.

Mega Planet was one of five companies that entered bids to install a fire suppression system at the SCB Park building, and won the job.

Police investigators were examining the contract between the SCB and Mega Planet to gauge the scope of the company's responsibility.

The two suspects would also be questioned about the sub-contract Mega Planet made with another company hired to complete the work. Lawyers would be present during the interviews.

Pol Lt Gen Sanit was confident the police would compile a strong case to nail those responsible for the deaths and injuries. He said more arrests might be made, but declined to give details.
