Songkran revellers get free rides on 2 motorways

The Highways Department will waive tolls for its two intercity motorways for nine days during the Songkran holiday to facilitate travel.

Motorists will be allowed to use motorways No.7 (Bangkok-Pattaya section) and No.9 (the Bang Pa-in-Bang Phli outer ring road) free of charge from 12.01am on April 9 to midnight of April 17.

The exemption was approved at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Sarawut Songsiwilai, deputy director-general of the Department of Highways' academic affairs division, said this year's Songkran travel period runs nine days and traffic congestion was expected on all major highways.

The proposal to waive motorway fees would help speed up traffic flow and give Songkran revellers convenience. The department would lose a daily income of 15 million baht, or a total of 135 million baht, for the nine-day exemption, he added.
