Villagers cry 'foul' over garbage recycling plant

RATCHABURI -- Residents of village 1 in tambon Nam Phu of Muang district have put up cloth banners in front of their houses along the Nam Phu-Nong Nok Karian road protesting against a smelly garbage recycling plant near their community.

They complain the plant has emitted foul chemical smells for about 15 years. Some of them had put "For sale" signs outside their homes because they could no longer tolerate the bad smell.

About 100 villagers gathered at the community hall on Thursday, preparing to submit a petition letter to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha through a local government agency.

Thanu Ngamyingyuad, a village representative, said officials from the Pollution Control Department had previously tested the quality of water in various sources near their community and found it was contaminated with chemical substances.  As a result, the villagers had to look for water from other sources away from their community.

Wisah Poonsirirat, a deputy governor, said he would forward the villagers' petition to the governor with a suggestion that he seek an inquiry into the problem.
