PATHUM THANI -- Pirated goods said to be worth around 729 million baht were destroyed in Khlong Luang district on Thursday.
The 126 tonnes of goods included 1.2 million items of clothing, handbags, belts, shoes, watches, mobile phones, CDs, VCDs and cosmetics falsely labelled with brand names.
The counterfeit products were seized in raids throughout the country by officials from various agencies.
They were spread out on the ground and crushed. Soft items such as clothing were also slashed or cut up.
The destruction was in line with the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and other related regulations to combat intellectual property rights violations.
Present to witness the destruction of the pirated products were Nantawan Sakuntanak, director-general of the Intellectual Property Department, representatives of the Royal Thai Police, Customs Department and Department of Special Investigation, and people from the entertainment sector.
