KHON KAEN -- The northeastern province has set a new record of alcohol-free human wave with over 61,000 participants, according to Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Pattaya.

A total of 61,725 people gathered on Khao Neao Road in the city to create the wave based on 10 requirements by the foundation at around 7pm on Friday. Among them were creating three rounds of waves, jumping from the ground with hands raised high and sitting down immediately after jumping.

The number was calculated when people filled a strip of one kilometre by six metres on the road.

The earlier record, also set by Khon Kaen people in 2011, involved 50,208 Songkran revellers.

Theerasak Theekayuphan, mayor of Khon Kaen Nakhon Municipality, said 110,184 people celebrated the water festival on Friday.

He said at first the municipality had been worried that it would not be able to break the record it made five years ago due to limited water splashing in the wake of the drought.

According to its records, 323,099 people entertained themselves during the three-day festival ending on Friday.
