A 25-year-old football star died on Saturday of wounds suffered in a gun attack on his house earlier this week.

Alongkot "Kan" Chansaeng, who played for the Division 2 side Thonburi City FC, died at 2am on Saturday after receiving treatment at Somdej Phra Pinklao Hospital for serious gunshot wounds.

The death shocked fans after the news went online on football websites on Saturday.

Alongkot was gunned down while drinking with about 10 friends in front of his house at the Setthakit housing estate on Phetkasem 102 Road in the Bang Pai area of Bang Khae district around 11.30pm on April 12, his relative Jiraporn Siri, 38, told police.

Before the attack, two men had run into the house in a panic to seek help. They claimed they had fled an attack by a group of men at a snooker parlour nearby.

Shortly afterward, a group of seven or eight men travelling on three motorcycles pulled up in front of Alongkot’s house but left when they saw many people sitting out front, said Ms Jiraporn. The two men who had fled into the house earlier then returned.

About 30 minutes later, a Toyota car arrived at the house and a man sitting in the back seat lowered the window and started sprayed bullets at the spot where Alongkot and his friends were drinking. The bullets struck Alongkot and two others in the back. He was badly hurt while his companions sustained minor gunshot wounds.

After the attack, his friends took Alongkot to a nearby hospital and he was transferred later to Somdej Phra Pinklao Hospital.

His body was taken to Wat Bunyapradit temple on Phutthamonthon Sai 2 for funeral rites.

Police are still hunting for the gunman and his accomplices.
