Man threatens to set fire to himself at police HQ

A police officer successfully subdued an unidentified man who threatened to set himself on fire in front of the Royal Thai Police head office in Bangkok on Monday morning, according to media reports.

The man arrived at Building No.1 of the RTP office about 8.30am and asked to meet Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, the deputy police chief, to lodge a complaint.

He said he had been unfairly accused of drug dealing and was heavily in debt after borrowing from loan sharks, which cost him his car and other assets.

The man poured kerosene over his body and held a lighter in a hand, threatening to set himself on fire.  Police at the scene talked to him in order to calm him down, according to the reports.

During the negotiation, a traffic policeman managed to get a hold of him and took away his lighter.  He was later taken into the building for talks.
