AYUTTHAYA - A new concrete and stone embankment along a canal in front of a temple in Sena district subsided on Monday, just a month after it was completed and handed over to the monks.

A section of the 15-million-baht wall built in front Wat Klang Khong Wattanaram in tambon Chao Sadej, caved in, creating a crack about 2 metres deep and over 100 metres long. The collapse caused the embankment to move more than a metre off its former base.

The embankment was built along Chao Sadej canal to prevent erosion.

Phra Baideeka Ekkalak Apassaro, abbot of the temple, said on Monday the embankment was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning and was handed over to the temple only one month ago.

The abbot said the water level in the canal had dropped a lot because of the drought and this caused the embankment to develop cracks. He feared the situation would worsen and affect buildings on the temple grounds.

The temple had no budget to repair the collapsed embankment, the abbot added.
