Seasonal storms hit Kalasin, Surin; warnings for April 19-21

Seasonal thunderstorms pounded areas of two northeastern provinces, damaging more than 100 houses and uprooting trees as residents braced for more violent weather.

A weather warning was issued on Tuesday for 29 provinces as storms and and gusty winds were expected to continue through Thursday.

In Kalasin, thunderstorms hit seven districts early Tuesday, with Kuchinarai district badly affected. Some 80 houses were damaged.

Theerasak Sinban, 30, a resident at tambon Nako whose house was badly damaged, said on Tuesday that the storm and strong winds had battered his community for about 20 minutes before his newly-built house collapsed.

In Surin, local officials and soldiers on Tuesday inspected damaged homes after thunderstorms hit several areas in Chom Phra, Sikhoraphum and Sanom districts on Monday evening.

In Sanom alone, 65 houses, six rice barns and two cars were damaged by storms that blew away roofs of many houses.

The Meteorological Department on Tuesday forecast that thunderstorms, high wind and hail are expected over the North, Northeast, East and the Central Plain between today and April 21 as high pressure from China extends over those regions.

It warned people to stay away from big trees and unsecured buildings.

The 29 provinces covered are: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Kamphaengphet, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Uttaradit, Phetchabun, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Roi Et, Nakhon Ratchasima, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, and Trat.
