The sun will shine directly overhead Bangkok on April 26, but that doesn’t mean Tuesday will be the hottest day of the year, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Narit) said.

At 12.16pm, your shadow will lie directly at your feet when walking the capital's streets, Narit deputy director Saran Poshyachinda said on Friday.

While Bangkok will get the sun's full illumination that day, other factors, including cloud cover and humidity, will determine if it will be 2016's hottest day, he said.

Thailand is one of many countries sitting between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn - each 23.4 degrees latitude from the equator -- where it is possible for the sun to shine directly overhead at any two points in the year. For Thailand, with the next occurrence will come Aug 16, during the traditional rainy season.

The Meteorological Department predicted that many areas in the North, Northeast, East and Central Plain will either be hot or extremely hot between from April 25-28.

Thailand recorded the new record for electricity use on April 19 at 28,357 megawatts.

On Thursday, the temperature peaked at 42 degrees Celsius in the northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae and Sukhothai.

Last year it peaked in Sukhothai at 43.1 degrees on April 20 and the all-time high remains 44.5 degrees, set in the northern province of Uttaradit in 1960.
