More storm warnings have been issued for 37 provinces in the North, Northeast and Central Plain through until Saturday, with the toll already mounting at 5 people killed and 6,500 homes damaged since mid-April.

Chatchai Phromlert, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said on Thursday that summer storms, many bringing hail, were likely to continue through to April 30 as a high pressure ridge from China hit hot weather to the region.

Since April 18, storms have struck 556 villages in 29 provinces, mostly in the Northeast, killed five people, injured one other and damaged 6,504 houses.

Other damage included a giant billboard falling onto a bus garage on the Mittraphap Highway near Pak Thong Chai intersection in Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima province. The billboard was built to standard but could not withstand the storm on Wednesday evening.

Its removal was expected to take about a week. Local officials have been instructed to check on the soundness of at least 20 other very large billboards in the centre of the northeastern province.
