PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN — A total of 87 dek waen street racers, many of them minors, were arrested and 78 modified racing motorcycles seized from them in Hua Hin in the early hours of Saturday.

A combined team of police, soldiers and rescue workers rounded up teen motorcycle racers who turned a newly built bypass route into their racetrack at around 1.30am on Saturday.

The Hua Na bypass road, which opened recently, has become popular among street racers who often race on it on Friday and Saturday nights, causing nuisance to local residents, said police.

Officers used four cars, with signal lights on, to drive along a road heading to the bypass road and two six-wheel trucks to block the bypass road.

Upon seeing the police vehicles, street racers on the road fled in panic. Some made U-turns, while others abandoned their bikes to hide in roadside pineapple plantations.

Officers swiftly moved in to round up those racers. A total of 87 young people were caught, 78 of them male. However, some managed to flee. Among those arrested were 56 youths aged under 18. A total of 78 modified bikes were confiscated from them.

The suspects were later handed over to Hua Hin police for legal action and their parents were being called to acknowledge the conduct of their children.
