PHETCHABURI – More than 10 million baht in cash was stolen from a safe overnight in an audacious robbery at a Bangkok Bank sub-branch in Cha-am district of Petchaburi province.
Cha-am police were informed of the robbery at the beachfront road sub-branch about 7.20am Monday.
Attapol Samakratthakit, manager of Bangkok Bank’s Hua Hin branch, said he and Cha-am police received a security alert from the robbed bank around 3am. Police responded but found nothing suspicious.
However, when staff entered the premises to begin work later in the morning they discovered the bank safe was open and over 10 million baht cash in Thai and foreign currencies missing. This sub-branch provides a money exchange service so it holds quite a large amount in foreign currencies.
Police suspect the robbers entered through the adjacent building, where a steel door is installed but does not lock. The thieves went up on the roof and then crossed over to the bank's rooftop, broke a lock and entered the building.
The robbers used gas cutting torches to open the safe and made off with the money, Pol Maj Gen Surapong Chaichan, commander of Phetchaburi police, said.
Footage from a security camera near the bank shows a silver pickup truck arrived and parked near the adjacent building's door about 9pm Sunday. It left around 3am without turning on its headlights - about the same time the security alert was issued, and police found nothing suspicious.
