Woman arrested over alleged B50m bank fraud scheme

Crime Suppression Division police yesterday arrested a woman over fraud allegations with damage worth more than 50 million baht.

Sakulsup Khunkanha, 34, a Chon Buri native, was nabbed at the car park of Holland Beer Hall on Rama II Road in Bang Khunthian district.

She was wanted on an arrest warrant issued on Jan 14 last year by the Chon Buri court on charges of fraud.

Police said a group of 10 complainants last year asked police to take legal action against the woman and her husband, Mongkol Jittatham, 38.

The complainants told police that in May 2013 they were approached by the woman who claimed to be a bank broker and claimed to know a credit department manager at a commercial bank.

According to police, the woman told the victims she was raising money to help some of the bank's debtors pay off loan debts and asked the victims to contribute.

She promised that if the loan debts were cleared and the bank agreed to extend new loans to the borrowers, the borrowers would pay back the money along with high interest via the woman, police said.

The victims told police that initially they got their money back, along with interest, as promised by the woman. This prompted more people to "invest".

However, the woman eventually stopped paying back the money, cut off contact and disappeared, police said. Police said at this stage there was no evidence as to whether her husband was involved.
