Myanmar inmate found hanged in cell

A Myanmar inmate who killed a guard in a botched jailbreak at Mae Sot District Prison in Tak on Saturday has been found hanged in his cell.

Mae Sot police were alerted by the prison yesterday that Somchai Khonphupha, also known as Jor Mi, 31, was found dead by prison guards. Somchai was sentenced to 10 years and five months behind bars for attempted murder, illegal entry into the country and carrying a knife. He was jailed on April 10 last year.

Authorities said he attacked Mongkholchai Narkwan, who oversaw the men's sleeping quarters at the prison, with a hammer early on Saturday, beating him about the head. He died in hospital from his injuries. Somchai tried to escape by climbing over the prison wall, but was stopped.
