Patient killed, 5 hurt in ambulance crash

KANCHANABURI - A patient injured in an earlier car crash was killed and five other people injured when their ambulance ran off a road and overturned in Sai Yok district on Monday night.

The accident occurred on Saengchuto Road in tambon Sing, said Pol Lt Chitnupong Rattanamuangmeesri, a duty officer at Sai Yok police station. It was reported to police about 8.20pm on Monday.

Police, soldiers and rescue workers sent to the scene found an ambulance belonging to Somdet Phra Piyamaharat Rommani Khet Hospital overturned in a roadside ditch.

Six injured people, four men and two women, were found trapped in the wreckage of the ambulance. Those injured were the patient being transported,  two of his relatives, two nurses and the driver. All were taken to a nearby hospital. However, Chatchai Ruangdet, the patient, was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police said Chatchai, 28, had been seriously hurt in earlier car crash. The ambulance was transfering him from Somdet Phra Piyamaharat Rommani Khet Hospital to another hospital for treatment of his injuries.

It was raining heavily when the accident occurred, according to ambulance driver Chatri Naksopha, 45. He lost control of the vehicle, which then ran off the road and into the ditch.

Police were investigating further.
