PHUKET -- The deputy honorary consul for the Russian Federation, Santi Udomkiratak, was killed in a road accident early on Wednesday, according to media reports.

Police said the accident occurred about 1.50am at the three-way intersection on Dao Rung Tad Mai in tambon Wichit, Phuket province.

Mr Santi, 50, was driving his black Mercedes-Benz E250 along the road, returning to his home in tambon Chalong, when his vehicle rammed into the rear end of a six-wheeled truck which had stopped for a red light. He was killed by the impact.

His vehicle was badly damaged and police and rescue workers had to pry it open to remove his body.

Mr Santi had been Russia's deputy honorary consul for Phuket, Krabi and Phangnga provinces since 2008.
