SURAT THANI - A man was killed when his pickup truck was hit by an express train at an unguarded railway crossing in Tha Chang district in the early hours of Thursday.

The pickup, with a Bangkok licence plate, was crossing over the tracks at Wat Amparam Thung-Ao in tambon Khlong Sai when express train No.35  from Bangkok to Butterworth struck the vehicle, Pol Capt Kannawatchara Kaewruang, deputy investigation chief at Tha Chang police station, said on Thursday.

The force of the crash threw the pickup driver out of the vehicle. Driver Chalard Somthong, 32, was found lying dead not far from the track, Thai media reported.

Police said there was no barrier at the crossing.
