Dormitory fire school to reopen

The Chiang Rai school where 17 children were killed in a dormitory fire, will reopen on Monday as 12 million baht in donations has poured in to help the families of the victims.

Raewat Wassan, manager of Pitakkiat Wittaya School in Wiang Pa Pao district, said the school was ready to reopen after being shut down following the deadly inferno last Sunday.

The school would only be able to say how many parents have withdrawn their children at the end of Monday.

He said the cause of the fire was not yet known. Police had interviewed 46 people and are waiting for child protection officials to accompany them to question the injured pupils.

Prasert Jitpleecheep, chief district officer of Wiang Pa Pao, said 12.3 million baht had been transferred to bank accounts opened to receive donations from the public to help the families of the fire victims.

The accounts would be officially closed on Monday morning. He urged those wanting to donate to contact the school directly.

Local authorities will meet with the parents of the dead pupils on Wednesday and Friday to provide financial assistance and determine further needs.
