PHRAE - At least 100 pigs were killed and many more ran off into the countryside when a truck delivering them to Chiang Rai crashed and overturned in Muang district on Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred near kilometre marker 3 on Liang Muang Road in tambon Na Chak in Muang district, said Pol Capt Wutthichai Churattanasupanond, a duty officer at Muang police station. It was reported to police about 8.30am.
The 10-wheel truck with a Chon Buri licence plate was carrying about 400 pigs weighing 20-30 kg each to Chiang Rai.
Driver Wichian Singsathaporn said a car cut in front of him and he swerved quickly to avoid it. He averted a collision but lost control of the truck, which plunged into the roadside ditch and overturned.
Dead and dying pigs were scattered in and around the vehicle. At least 100 of the animals were killed. Many of the others fled to a dubious freedom, and their fate remained uncertain. It was unclear how many were lost in total.
