TRAT -- Six people died when a cement truck ploughed across traffic lanes and slammed into a truck filled with highway officials Thursday morning in Muang district.

Police and rescue teams around 9am rushed to the accident on Sukhumvit Road in tambon Tha Prik to find four people sprawled on the pavement, one already dead and three in critical condition. Two later died at Trat Hospital.

About 20 metres away, a cement truck was found along with the bodies of its driver and a passenger. A six-wheeled truck belonging to the Leam Klud office of the Highways Department also was found demolished with one body recovered from the back.

Initial investigation revealed that the six-wheeler was carrying seven officials to work in Muang district. The mixer rolled across a lane to impact the truck. Those in the back of the smaller truck were thrown into the road.

Pol Lt Pitsanu Khaowong, a case officer at Trat police, said he would question witnesses again to determine the root cause of the accident.
