A network working to promote occupational and environmental health safety will today submit a letter to Industry Minister Wannarat Channukul, asking him to monitor the progress of the ban on asbestos.
The network, led by Dr Pornchai Sittisarunkul, a member of the Association of Occupational and Environmental Health, is worried the Yingluck Shinawatra government will not pay much attention to the previous administration's regulation, which requires the ministry to declare asbestos as a class 4 hazardous material and that any production, import and export of the mineral should be banned.
Dr Pornchai said he led members of his network, which comprises doctors, nurses, health staff and consumer protection advocates, to make the move as he was afraid that if authorities in the government did not enforce the regulation strictly, many more workers might be vulnerable to asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma.
