Breaking the fall

Know your way around house just as health fails with advancing years

A house not in order and with damaged flooring can make its occupants trip and fall, particularly older people who are at high risk because of their advanced age when health, strength and sense of balance start failing.

Dr Boonyawat Chanopas, an orthopaedist at Pattana Medical Center Clinic, has revealed the past two months the number of elderly patients coming for bone and joint treatment has increased, many arriving with sprained wrist and ankle, as well as vertebral compression fracture sustained while moving articles around house and tripping over objects cluttering the floor.

"You see many of my patients suffer from osteoporosis, a medical condition by which bones become thinner and less resistant to stress, and susceptible to fracture. But they may be not be aware as the condition doesn't exhibit any symptoms," Dr Boonyawat said.
