The New Life Foundation will host a meditation retreat led by the venerable Lama Rinchen Phuntsok, a highly respected scholar and meditation master from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, from August 1-5.
This is an inaugural retreat that will be held in the foundation's new mud-brick meditation centre near Chiang Rai. Built by volunteers, the centre is 201m2 and features a traditional Thai leaf roof. Set in the woods, it is the foundation's first venture into sustainable building. The New Life Foundation is an international recovery community for people suffering from alcoholism, addiction, depression, burnout, relationship issues or abuse. The foundation already has one meditation hall, plus a dining hall and 54 private rooms for guests.
"We plan to build an entire village around the new meditation hall, so that we can host large retreats for many different organisations," says Julien Gryp, co-director of the non-profit foundation.
