BANGKOK - About 310,000 Thai youngsters have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), many of them, because their mothers had been smoking and drinking while they were pregnant, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Deputy Public Health Minister Cholanan Srikaew said on Monday that the hyperactive children are mostly boys. They cannot concentrate for long and are rash and unruly.

So pregnant women smoking and drinking alcohol is only bad is they are carrying a male child. Huh?

The poor choices people make eating processed food and drinking cola available at every corner has the most to do with this .Computer games dont help .

This assumes many thousands of modern Thai mothers are heavy smokers and drinkers and are ignorant of pre-natal health care ... just not true at all! Junk food and poor diet are to blame. Just observe the phenomenal increase in obesity in all ages of the modern family. The Thai Ministry of Public Health should be more (hyper) active in researching findings in other countries and comparing their results with the Thai situation.

Thailand's not so brilliant answer to this was banning Adderall (a prescription amphetamine) and Ritalin (another stimulant) which are the first line treatment for these symptoms in the US and Canada. With hyperactive children they have the opposite effect then expected, making them calm and receptive to learning but fully alert.

rubbish,this is caused by massive amounts of sugar and chemicals in processed food plus fruit drink (read sugar)

Fluoride has also been shown to play a part due to Pineal gland calcification
