'Lucky man' _ the mystery of an uncanny con
Hypnosis, drugs or sleight of hand fail to explain the work of a trickster who nonetheless seems to have astounding knowledge of his marks

He goes by the name John Singh. Or Yogi. Or Bob. He has a tattoo on his right hand or wears a turban. He'll approach you on Sukhumvit Road between Nana and Asok, off Khao San Road or in Pattaya or Patong. The opening line often goes like this: "You are a lucky man _ want to know why?" Then he'll tell you something about your life no stranger should know. Out of curiosity you stop and listen for more.
There are a few such men who offer fortunes and demand money in exchange. But one in particular leaves confusion and a bitter taste in the mouths of those he approaches, who rack their brains for a memory of what transpired and no explanation of how he could know such intimate details of their lives.
Dominic, 36, a regular visitor to Bangkok from Adelaide, Australia, describes how he was approached by John Singh near Mahboonkrong shopping centre earlier this year.
