Farmers in the dark over crop insurance

The government has begun a much-needed scheme to assist people affected by natural disaster, although many remain unaware or unsure of its benefits

Rice farmer Nalad Kaewsikhao is luckier than many others whose crops were destroyed by last year's devastating floods. She purchased a crop insurance policy for the yield from her 38.5 rai plot of land from the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) in Kalasin's Yang Talat district. The crop insurance programme is open to farmers nationwide, but so far covers only seasonal rice crops (see sidebar).

REASON FOR HOPE: The new crop insurance scheme should help insulate farmers from natural calamities and streamline government relief efforts.

Ms Nalad paid 60 baht in premiums per rai, and the government contributed another 69.47 baht, for a total of 129.47 baht per rai. This is collected by the BAAC, which acts as an intermediary and forwards the premium to private insurance companies (see graphic).
