Thousands of Myanmar's sick journey across the country for treatment in Thailand's border areas as the government in Nay Pyi Taw fails to fund essential health services, relying on others to fill in the cracks

Mary Boullier's pale fingers probe the swollen skin surrounding the barely opened slit that remains of nine-year-old Tin Tin's left eye and says, "We don't know what is causing the swelling around her eye, but when Tin Tin was admitted here she had severe anaemia. If it was left untreated it could have caused heart failure."

Dr Boullier, 30, is a paediatrician registrar from the UK who has worked for 10 months as a volunteer at the Mae Tao Clinic on the Thai-Myanmar border. Mae Tao, located in the Thai border town of Mae Sot, is also known as Dr Cynthia's Clinic, after its founder, Cynthia Maung.
