The government's resident troubleshooter Varathep Rattanakorn - who oversees the much-maligned rice-pledging scheme - says the controversial subsidy is being tightened up, but has refused to reveal key figures.

Mr Varathep, who juggles roles as Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, deputy agriculture and cooperatives minister and deputy chairman of the National Rice Policy Committee, defended the scheme during a panel discussion at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand on Wednesday.
