Eight dead in grenade blast

Eight revellers are dead and more than 100 injured after a hand grenade was thrown into the crowd at a temple fair in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lam Phu.

The blast occurred at 11.30pm on Saturday when a grenade was hurled into a crowd dancing at a Mor Lam Sing folk music concert at Wat Sirimongkol in Si Bun Ruang district.

Uthen Boonmee, 20, from tambon Non Sa-ad, was arrested yesterday. Police said he confessed to throwing an M26 grenade into the crowd because he was angry at a group of teenagers who assaulted his uncle.

"The man said he had bought the bomb for 500 baht from Loei province," Nong Bua Lam Phu governor Athikom Suwanapong said.

Witnesses said several brawls had broken out in front of the stage before the blast.

The grenade exploded just 25 metres from the stage, district police chief Pol Col Thammajak Kongmongkol said.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals where eight were reported to have died. Most of the injured were discharged yesterday, although 48 are still in hospital.

Mr Athikom said security had been beefed up at temple fairs to prevent outbreaks of violence, but he would call a meeting of authorities today in a bid to further improve security.

    Stomach Discussion 4.

Yes you are right it happens all over the world. What is different about Thailand is that when the culprits are caught they simply buy their way out of gaol (unless of course they are foreign authors).

Oh I forgot to mention the violent, lawless gang wars between students that has keft one student dead and another with his body literally covered in stabs from a fork.

Thailand has long been regarded the Asian country with the biggest load of illegal firearms. I strongly believe it is second only to US.

I was in an Eastern province last year and I saw a couple of soldiers with M16s at the local carnival. Thinking there was trouble, I told my Thai friends to leave. But the "ever-so-innocent" me was told that it is normal for carnivals to have M16 stopping the rowdy kids from making trouble.

I was also at a mini-concert at the local shopping plaza and there were military police with pistols providing security for the "dara". It has become a common sight to have armed (I mean with firearms)guards at venues where many locals congregate. Yet, in the end when deadly violence breaks out, many "innocent" and "not-so-innocent" people get badly hurt and some killed.

THis place has become more and more lawless because Thai laws are always besieged with pleas for kindness. 36 male teenagers went on a rampage and were stopped on time (thank God for that!). But the boys were given only slaps on their wrists and told to go home to be "disciplined" by their parents, if the parents are at home. But all Thai parents would do is say, " My dear child, please don't get into trouble and make Daddy or Mummy sad." That is ALL the law-breakers ever get!

Even if they do get "punished" by the law, they would be released just because their parents would "buy" their kids' freedom and let them do damage again.

Many Thais don't stop and think for a moment that if it ever happens to them, what would they do? Many Thais always say, "Oh no! It did not happen to me. So ....mai pen rai (It doesn't matter)

This, my dear fellow-readers of Bangkok Post, is THAILAND ... at its worse of course. There's always a good side to things here. But where is it?

    Have a nice day!

    Too Mango Man.-
You can't compare this action with others. This happens around the world. It's an "one man show". The other's are problem's inside your community (in other countrys they have the same or similar problems). But you are right, the signal around the world are worse because grenade is connected with terrorism and that means unsure. The "death" of tourism. My wife and although I get often asked - Can we go to Thailand, is it sure ? We agree and explain as far as possible but sometimes I have a bad stomach too.

Blockaded parliament, closed airports, gun fire on city streets, illegal nightclub infernos, refugees abandoned at sea to die, spoilt rich kids driving their cars into innocent people, and now this!

What a bunch of violent, lawless people!

The change Thailand had to have. I am sure in this financila crisis people will be flocking to come to such a peace loving Thailand with this inept mob. The Democrats did not speak out against the THUG PAD so what do you expect it brings when you are in power.
