A man has been decapitated, believed to be part of a grisly "training course" for insurgents.
The man and his wife were killed yesterday by a suspected insurgent who beheaded the husband and left the bodies in a rubber plantation in Raman district of Yala.
They were attacked while tapping rubber. The attackers left the dead man's head about 50 metres from his body.
A highly placed intelligence source said there were hundreds of militant members skilled in beheading tactics taught during guerrilla warfare training.
The source said the decapitation was part of the insurgency training course which beginners learned from a demonstration video clip showing the grisly process. It is believed hundreds of insurgents have "graduated" from the training course over the years.
Following the beheading, a policeman received serious shrapnel wounds from a booby trap set up to target those inspecting the crime scene.
On Saturday, a man was shot dead in an ambush in Yala's Kabang district. Isamael Jintara, 38, was killed while on his way to a mosque.
In Narathiwat, seven suspects were arrested yesterday on charges of involvement in insurgency, illegal possession of firearms and drug trafficking in simultaneous, pre-dawn raids in 13 districts.
