Protest takes a holiday

Opponents of new Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday they would take a break for the five-day New Year holiday, then resume protests that already have forced the premier to move the venue of his first policy speech.

"We'll have a small party tonight and disperse after midnight so that we can take time to celebrate the New Year festival," said Veera Musikhaapong, a leader of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), known as the "red shirts".

"We will come back after the New Year break," Shinawat Haboonpak, another UDD core leader said. "The fight is not over yet, we will not give up."

The pledge raises the threat of 2009 starting with the kind of problems that marred 2008 - months of street protest, government gridlock and damage to the economy and national morale.

"Today is the last day of a year which brought great concern to everyone," said Mr Abhisit in a New Year's Eve address broadcast on radio and TV nationwide. "I'd like all those worries to pass with the year and let us start a new one with hope.

"Let's make our wish come true."

Thousands of red-shirted supporters of fugitive former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra prepared to disperse from parliament, which they blockaded for two days to press their demands for Mr Abhisit to resign and call fresh elections.

They prevented Mr Abhisit from giving the government's policy address in the Lower House on Tuesday, although he fooled the demonstrators by ducking into the Foreign Ministry to deliver the speech, as required by the Constitution.

Mr Abhisit, the 27th Thai prime minister since 1932 but the fourth in troubled 2008, came to power in mid-December after the Constitution Court banned previous premier Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin's brother-in-law.

The court verdict reversed the political scene. Yellow-shirted anti-Thaksin protesters had occupied streets and even the two Bangkok airports as Mr Abhisit backed their demand for the government to resign and call elections.

Today, red-shirted pro-Thaksin protesters have occupied streets to back demands by the new Puea Thai iteration of the pro-Thaksin paqrty for Mr Abhisit to resign and call elections.

Mr Abhisit promised on Wednesday that the self-exiled Thaksin, ousted in the 2006 military coup to avoid a jail term for a corruption conviction, would get fair treatment if he decided to return home.

"The government will give Thaksin fairness," Mr Abhisit told reporters. But he said Thaksin must recognise and submit to the justice system.

He said he accepted that protests by Thaksin loyalists may continue but added that if the government was successful then the "protests could not pressure us."

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the government had plans to talk to opponents to seek a peaceful solution. But there is no sign the red shirts are any more likely to talk than their yellow-shirted predecessors were.

The red shirts say the Abhisit government is illegitimate and that the court verdict that dissolved the previous government was a silent coup. (With reports by AFP)

Dear (Ms/Mr ?) Edith and sidekick Andre,

The Truth Shall Set You Free.

You two are sitting on the wrong side of the fence. Using NAZI'ism to attack other postings is not only disgusting, it should be embarassing to you and your families to let everyone know how you think and what you think of all other people who don't walk your walk or talk your talk.

FASCISM grew from "Uniformed zealots with unopen minds and an agenda of hate for all others not like themselves".
The PAD is an excellent example of a fascist type entity.

If you both are in such disagreement with my facts than PLEASE take the time to rebute them ONE BY ONE with the facts as to why MY FACTS, in your opinion, ARE INCORRECT. Can you??? Or are Andre and Edith simply biased completely un-open minded robots pushing your agenda on everybody???

Your agenda by the way is to avoid my arguments which have clear validity by unrelated complaining about a "Drug War". Your complaints should be directed to the Police/Military which is where orders were placed and carried out. That is where there has always been a big problem well before Thaksin's time. Thaksin NEVER ordered killings you biased hateful close-minded people.

My major points are not about Thaksin at all. Stop being so narrow minded and try to digest the meaning of my post. Its about Laws, Democracy and the Judicial system. Not about Thaksin. He is only the example used to show whats going on. Embiciles!

Awaiting your logical facts to rebute mine. Please try! One fact at a time! If you read my post it might actually dawn on you that something is wrong with your line of thinking. That maybe, just maybe, there is something foul happening on the side you two think are your saviours.

ps, while your opinion counts, my repostings gain strength in numbers and validity while your energy wasting snips at others does nothing :)
ppss, I will continue to post this and other truths everytime you both attack other peoples posts without proven facts and evidence.
pppsss, as long as my posts keep pissing you two off than I know I'm doing something fruitful and hitting the right buttons.
ppppssss, who knows, maybe I'll even win both of your closed minds over to the truth about what is going on :)
pppppsssss, I'm starting to wonder which side is the more uneducated???
    ppppppssssss,

Oh yeah, two points you both need to understand before ranting and raving about this and that Thaksin money thing.

1/ Nobody wants to pay taxes. EVERYONE wants to pay, legally, the absolute least amount possible. That is not stealing from the government. That is not a criminal act. That is why there is NOTHING ILLEGAL about using tax havens if done legally. You may not like it because of your overly focused ill hatred of one man (who you don't even really know) but you know what, TOO BAD! In the scheme of things nobody really cares what you two think (if that is actually what you do).

2/ The Shin Corporations are public companies. Since you likely do not know what that means I will enlighten you both. They are not owned by only one man but by thousands of investors. UBC, SATTEL, SHIN, ADVANCE, etc.. they are all traded on the stock exchange and are international companies. Their function is to maximize profits in order to maximize investors returns (dividends). Their intrinsic value is soley based upon what people are willing to pay to own a share of those companies. Each company must answer to its shareholders for what it does and how it operates in order to maximize each investors return. That is done by way of boardmember and shareholder meetings. Everything discussed and actioned must be "Transparent", another word you both likely do not understand. Transparent means everything must be printed, published and made available to the public so all shareholders can know and make informed investment decisions. There is a chairman of the board for each company. PM Thaksin was not the Chairman of any of these companies after 2004. Can you comprehend what this means in the scheme of all your moronic postings about Thaksin's money issues?

    Discussion 4 : 01/01/2009 at 01:42 AM4

The UDD is a communist party headed by Thaksin, who giving each person 400 baht to attend the rallies in Bangkok. This is the truth, because I was in Thailand and my friend received a phone call to go to the rallies and wear "RED" Shirt and advise where to pick up the cash after the rallies is done. He did not attend, because this is a disgrace & immoral to him. I guess people attended, because they wanted the money which I do not blame them. It frees cash given out by a stupid former Prime Minister Thaksin. Just take his money (Thaksin) until it run out. This kind of person does not deserve the second chance to be let in the country. The only thing he deserves is to be put away for good for the sake of the country. Thaksin is a very evil guy who acts so innocent, but is very dangerous. The 3 headed UDD from the "Truth" show should wake up and face the reality, because Thaksin cannot buy you forever. I would like to remind all Thai's that the current government should take action now or the country might end up with blood shed, because Thaksin will use his money. Thaksin cannot go to any country that is free, so he is hiding in a country that is mostly control by terrorist or communist country.

    Discussion 2 : 31/12/2008 at 08:29 PM2

For the record, Thaksin was probably the least corrupt one in a long time. To make my points valid I do not wish Thaksin to return to power but only to see honest un-biased Justice and a true Democracy for all Thai's.

Many people with no knowldege of the history of Thai politics are making very crazy statements based only on emotion.

    Lets get our facts right:

1/ It took a military coup appointed supreme court and government over 2 years to convict Thaksin.

2/ The most damning evidence is reported to have come from "SPOKEN WORD" and "WRITTEN TESTEMANT" of a very few insiders. This came years into the coup, anyone can argue such "testemants" were forced out, paid for etc.....why did these people wait SO MANY YEARS and only during the coup before suddenly coming out with these accusations ?

3/ The length of time to convict Thaksin points to the potential that the convictions are "engineered" in order to discredit and disgrace him, a point he himself is making by fleeing the country saying "he cannot get a fair trial" in Thailand under the coup appointed system.

4/ It is said "All politicians are corrupt". The amount of money that Thaksin is reported to have been corrupt with, is less than the country has lost through the PAD shutting the airports illegally. So why have the PAD leaders and all persons involved in shutting the airport down not been jailied for a long time ?

5/ Going back to the last Democrat government, why was there no bans or convictions or dissolvement ?

6/ Moving forward a few years later, why, after the OAG recommended that TRT and the Democrats be dissolved, was only the TRT dissolved ?

7/ The 2007 constitution protects the CNS members who organised the coup, as they are immune from all previous actions. This is said to be why the 2007 constitution is being "protected" by the PAD, certain people will lose their immunity and likely could be tried for treason from breaking the "Peoples Charter" they threw in the rubbish bin and replaced with their 2007 version. Do you think the PAD are worried about just little old Thaksin ?

8/ The current Supreme Court Judges who have ruled 100% of the cases against the TRT, PPP Government & officials as guilty WERE HAND-PICKED, CHOOSEN BY THE MILITARY COUP GOVERNMENT. Does that not reek of corruption and a failed legal system?

9/ The last election took place under the coup appointed system, under martial law in places, with solidiers reported to be sent out to "speak to people", with the solidiers reportedly order to vote Democrat, with reportedly massive resources placed out to watch all PPP politicians for corruption but ignore other parties, and in spite of this the PPP won. The PAD claims the election was biased and not fair are in fact correct, the last elections were extrremely biased against the PPP and yet still they won.

10/ People "hate" the Democrats as they are seen as the "untouchables" with a lot of old Elite rulers in the background pulling all the strings. Which is why its said they are immune to all charges and are said, by most peopele, to be the most corrupt of all, representing the "old ways" and "old power cliques". We can see this clearly in the fact that every legal case thrown into the courts against the TRT, PPP government and its representatives is a "GUILTY VERDICT". While all cases against the Democrats, PAD are "NEVER GUILTY VERDICTS". Does everybody truly believe that the Democrats are so clean and pure angels? Did the PAD do many things illegal? YES, we all know it and saw it on television BUT will they ever stand trial? And if so, more important will they ever be found guilty???

11/ Other not less than important facts include nation dividing actions such as the minority Democrat MP's NEVER once tried to work with the majority government (TRT or PPP...) AND NEVER lifted one finger (or lip) to follow the law of the nation against the PAD's numerous crimes.

12/ It is the Democrats who have the history as being some of the worse, MOST CORRUPT, nation robbers which is why we saw the rise of the TRT in the first place (remember everyone???).

13/ It is the Democrats who likely supported & orchastrated this entire mess we see since the 2007 military coup. Why we ask? The answer is simple. POWER = MONEY = PERSONAL GAIN. "Once Corrupted Always Corrupted" All you followers of the PAD and Democrats who enjoyed seeing Democracy vanish in the 2007 coup PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THE HISTORY OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

14/ Under PM Thaksin leadership Thailand became the number 1 ranked economy in S.E.Asia. Today Thailand ranks 3rd and falling. It is economic prosperity that brings a better life to all Thais. PM Thaksin is a brilliant businessman with powerful associates in governments & businesses throughout the world. He knows how to run a country. That is why everyone could see a REAL difference in their quality of life when he was leading. The Majority of Thai's still feel that PM Thaksin truly cares about them and their wellbeing.

The list of discussion points and facts goes on and on, but while many here simply say Thaksin or not, the whole Yellow against Red is more than just him, it goes back to before him and will carry on after him as it is now, there is far far far more at stake, so please open your minds.

PAD/Democrats now want everyone to "give the government a chance..." They think anarchy is only starting now that the reds are protesting the stealing of a country by the minority? Wake up! Anarchy started when the Military got the green light to take-over the government in 2007, changing the constitution so that one bad apple destroys the entire majority party (twice). Anarchy was there when PM Samak lost his job because of a cooking show (the world laughed at the ruling against him). Anarchy has been in front of everyone's televisions with the yellow shirts doing anything/everything they want without worry of Democratic laws being enforced. The majority will win the rich Bangkok elite. Just wait and see. And don't think for one second it is a North versus South problem. Many MANY southern Thai's understand what is Democracy and what is not. Go Red's. Protect the country from old money power hungry thief's.

Does every Democrat/PAD supporter think I am one of those "uneducated voters" who do not know how to vote
correctly? Or was paid off to vote? Facts are facts so please don't distort them. Thaksin made his money from the bottom up working his
business into businesses that grew and grew. He is extremely business savvy. Nothing wrong with making money
the old fashioned way is there? That is what capitalism and democracy support. Individual freedom to prosper
(legally). He ran for office to help all Thai's prosper or do you think he did it soley to make his already
huge assets larger? Just look at Thaksin's results, Thailand became the number 1 S.E.Asia economy during his
leadership. Today, with all the Coup's and Protest's, Thailand is ranked 3rd and falling fast.
I choose to believe it is the fore not the latter. So thanks all you coup/dictatorship lovers thanks for trying
to make a point. Sorry it missed badly.

Now the Police/Military are taking their jobs seriously. Makes me ill how these Democrats/PAD can manipulate and destroy the country and the votes of 67% of all Thai's. The PAD can attack anything/everything without any problems from law enforcement. How disgusting is that for the future of Democracy? Which protester is the true Democrat? Not yellow for sure.

Finally, vote buying! What crap! The vast majority (99% at least) who voted TRT or PPP were not paid one baht. The majority is still the majority no matter what the PAD/Democrats wish to believe.

    The True Thai Majority...Protect
    Democracy!

Oh (sorry)! I've been asked "What about Samak & Somchai Not dissolving the house...?" The legitimate (elected by the people not handed to them by the coup appointed court justices) government should NEVER capitulate to thugs, criminals and thiefs such as the PAD was.

In order to accomplish the Government’s Policies, the PM and Government must attend to a few issues which need immediate actions. They are:

    1. The core leaders of the PAD must faced the MUSIC, the country is in disarray cos’ of them.
    2. Appoint a new FM to replace Khun Kasit, he is a disgrace to the diplomatic corp. After what he had stated during the PAD demonstrations, how can he face the ASEAN leaders in Feb 09.
    3. Remove the Army Chief, if he can disobey the Ex-PN Somchai orders, he can also do likewise to you. His sincerity and loyaly towards the country and Government is doubtful. On hindsight, Khun Somchai should have remove him but did not thinking that Gen Anupong would be on his side.
    4. Khun Newin Chidchod, the traitor from the PPP, must be sidelined or else he will play havoc with the government. All of us know that his party is instrumental in putting you in power.
If your government wants a smooth administration, the 4 issues as stated must be attended to so that Thai people and foreigners will have trust and confidence in your government. For your policies to be accomplished, some things must give way - as stated above.
Mr PM with your intelligence you should be able to analyze and collate all the urgent issues your government is facing or else you may be just warming the PM seat and would cool off in a short time if the issues stated are not attended to immediately. Don’t be a puppet – you are from Oxford not Oxbridge.
    Good luck Mr PM.
