Bomb disposal units continued to inspect the Government House compound for a second day Friday, after a ping-pong bomb exploded at the site.
The explosion near the Thai Khu Fah building occurred at 2pm as Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was chairing a meeting of senior security officers.
The bomb was hidden in a drainpipe near the building and went off while Government House officials were clearing the compound to prepare for Children's Day activities.
``The bomb was set off accidentally,'' said security chief Pongsak Siriwong. It went off when workers removed the pipe cover. Nobody was injured, he said.
The bomb was thought to have been placed in the pipe during the three months the People's Alliance for Democracy occupied Government House to oust the former government led by prime minister Somchai Wongsawat.
After PAD members ended their protest and withdrew from Government House, security officials cleared the complex. They used metal detection equipment and sniffer dogs to look for arms, bombs and other weapons.
But the blast yesterday showed not all had been found and removed.
Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Jongrak Chuthanont said dirty water in the drains could have affected the ability of sniffer dogs to detect arms and weapons.
The Metropolitan Police Bureau's ordnance and explosive device inspection team will check the compound again today.
Mr Pongsak said children who visit Government House tomorrow will only be allowed to enter designated areas and buildings, including Santi Maitree, Thai Khu Fah and Naree Samosorn for security reasons. Areas and buildings under renovation will be off limits.``We're highly concerned over safety matters. That's why we do not allow children to walk around Government House,'' he said.
