Coup-makers offer Thaksin bounty

Military officers and businessmen who backed the 2006 coup that unseated Thaksin Shinawatra have offered a bounty of one million baht (about $28,348) for his arrest and return to Thailand.

Target: Thaksin

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, meanwhile, launched an unusual appeal to three Mideast envoys to prevent Thaksin from using their countries to launch attacks on the government.

In a meeting held at Democrat Party headquarters rather than at the foreign ministry, Mr Kasit told envoys from Dubai, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates that he felt "uncomfortable" that Thaksin was using their countries while "attacking Thailand".

He invited Thai Muslims to the meeting, according to the official Thai News Agency, but there were no further details.

Mr Kasit, who was an active participant in anti-Thaksin action since 2006, including seizing the Bangkok airports last year, told the foreign envoys that some countries had already complied with the Thai government's request to deny shelter to the fugitive ex-premier.

The anti-Thaksin group, headed by former military junta member Gen Somjate Boonthanom, charges that Thaksin has led anti-government protesters in slandering the royal institution several times, and wants him back to serve his jail sentence.

Thaksin has tried to keep his whereabouts secret, leading to rampant rumours in Bangkok. Current guesses claim he is in Dubai or Cambodia.

Gen Somjate, who was the head of the Council for National Security's (CNS) secretary-general's office during the junta's rule, urged the country to join hands in solving political unrest, but charged that Mr. Thaksin is the root cause of the problem.

Gen Somjate said the bounty has been put up by the group of unidentified business leaders. It will be paid to anyone who can bring Thaksin to Thailand to face his two-year prison sentence on corruption charges.

Political turmoil could end if Thaksin is brought back to face justice and further prosecution, he claimed.

He also distributed what he called the "first statement" charging that Thaksin and his red-shirted supporters from the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) had “slandered the royal institution both openly and secretly” since he was forced from power two and a half years ago.

Meanwhile, a lawyer acting on behalf of Thaksin filed a defamation complaint with police against Privy Councillor Gen Pichitr Kullavanijaya over Gen Pichit's media interview last week, when he claimed that Thaksin did not respect the royal institution, wanted to disband the institution and that he had also deposited a large sum of money in the Cayman Islands, known as a haven for money launderers.

After his meeting with the foreign envoys, Mr Kasit said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had met with Council of State officials five months ago regarding revoking Thaksin's passport, and the ministry is still awaiting its reply.

He said he would discuss the matter with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva so that the issue could be considered at a cabinet meeting and a joint agreement could be made.

By The Way, all Red-shirts who attack my on this topic, better leave your keyboard for what it is and join your friends in Bangkok. I hear they have about 240.000 short.

And then after your "party" of today please return to your homes and start enjoying Songkran.

Let us AMAZE the world and show that we are all Smiling Thais. I convinced that attracks more tourist and creates a better investment climate than causing troubles in Bangkok.

Hello Shannon (Disc.21) Thanks for your reaction on my comments. I am fully aware of the fact that the military removed Thaksin on 19 September 2006. I am also aware that Thaksin was “elected.” So we only have a different opinion if these elections where like you mention democratically. As soon as votes have been bought (village-heads or other “important” figures have been bribed to influence the outcome of these elections), I want to deny that someone has been democratically chosen because vote buying is simple illegal and this makes it the outcome of the elections illegal to. Vote buying is unacceptable. Illegal votes should therefore not be accepted or “counted.” Later when the PPP became “elected“, this was again under influence of bribes and vote buying.
What concerns the Thaksin charges, I only believe Thaksin should be happy that only around 6 heavy cases are still pending. After he will have the convictions for these more severe charges he will most likely not be able to leave jail before he is 80. Thaksin own comparison with his destiny and that off Nelson Mandela is a proof of Thaksin’s megalomania. Nelson has always been a freedom fighter for his people. Thaksin only fights for his personal well being and to keep his own freedom. His family-roots teached him Tax-farming. This is done by exploiting poor farmers. (keep on reading and you will understand). Thaksin is great in manipulating for his own benefit and all his hand-outs to the poor and rural people had only the ultimate purpose to enrich himself by stealing from the Thai people (Thailand means Freeland or land of the Free) But Thaksin wants to CHANGE Thailand in his own benefit. Maybe he has the old name Siam for it in mind but for sure, it looks like he wants “Tax farmer” again. Only this time he will takes his money from the backdoor. (Airports, Airport-scanners, Airport Parking-contracts, Birma-Loans, Tax evasion, or whatever he can get his hands on.)
I was not disappointed when ‘former’ Miss Thaksin was not found guilty in the land-deal-scam; she had less responsibility then her husband the Prime Minister. All people interested in that land where aware that Thaksin had an ‘eye’ on this land and who dares to compete a Prime Minister in bidding? Also, do not forget that Miss Potjaman Damapong still, most likely, has to spend 3 years in jail for Tax evasion. O.K. she is still walking around (until this morning), but for some reason (China escape), I do not believe she can bail out anymore in the future.
Then with help of Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thaksin) in a nutshell the Shinawatra’s wealth before he became Prime Minister. The Shinawatra dynasty is an old one and started, for what Thailand, concerns with Thaksin's great-grandfather Seng Sae Khu was a Hakka Chinese immigrant from Meizhou, Guangdong who arrived in SIAM in the 1860s and settled in Chiang Mai in 1908. His eldest son, Chiang Sae Khu, was born in 1890 and married a Thai woman, Saeng Somna. Chiang's eldest son, Sak, adopted the Thai surname Shinawatra ("does good routinely") in 1938, and the rest of the family followed suit. Seng Sae Khu made his fortune through tax farming (which is seen by many as exploiting of small famers. The Khu/Shinawatra family later founded Shinawatra Silks and then moved into finance, construction, and property development. Lert Shinawatra opened a coffee shop and several businesses, and grew oranges and flowers in Chiang Mai’s, San Kamphaeng. By the time Thaksin was born, the Shinawatra family was one of the richest and most influential in Chiang Mai. Thaksin's father, Lert, was born in Chiang Mai in 1919 and married Yindi Ramingwong. In 1968, Lert Shinawatra entered politics and became an MP for Chiang Mai. Thaksin and his wife ventured into several businesses while he was still in the police, including a silk shop, a movie theater and an apartment building. All were failures and left him over 50 million Baht in debt. He established ICSI in 1982 and, using his police contacts, leased computers to government agencies with modest success. However later ventures in security systems (SOS) and public bus radio services (Bus Sound) failed.
In Thaksin’s case I am happy that his tremendous wealth is being withhold because if he had access to this money now he would be able to rent foreign merchants (soldiers). Let us not forget he shows signs of frustrations, paranoia and he is still claims to be innocent. I do not believe Thaksin belongs in jail. I believe he should be helped in a mental-institution. We had a murder-attempt on a member of the Privy Council last night luckily this plot is halted. Now a major is blamed to be the mastermind. But let’s wait and see who was finally paying the bills. Currently Thailand is worldwide in the news for the current Red-shirts protests. Thaksin himself the commander behind this. His children left the country. His ex-wife did and Somchai fled. What you want to know more. They are attacking the residence of Prem. If you are Thai and if you love Thailand, then stop hurting the Royal institution and hurting the King. If you are foreigner and you do not like it the way they run the country then just leave.
Richard (disc.22) Apologize but English ain’t my mother tongue, but to blame some-one some writing errors tells more that you wear blinkers and that you are “short-sighted” then it informs you about my simplicity.

LONG LIVE KING BHUMIBOL ADULYADEJ and the Thai Royal institution.

Neighbor...... are you for real? Let's get the facts straight, not the facts that the Democrats are selling the REAL ONES. The Military removed Thaksin in Sept 2006, he was the democratically elected PM. The military setup investigations and spoke about over 100 charges they would lay against Thaksin to justify removing the elected PM and spent the next 15 months under military rule cooking up charges. The PPP was elected by almost 2/3 majority. Not only were PPP members Yellow and Red Carded for vote buying but so was members of other parties, including the Democrats. It has been 2.5 years since Thaksin was removed and of the hundred plus charges they were going to get thaksin for he has been found guilty of being involved (allegedly) with his wife purchasing land under value that the other 2 developers bidding said they could not or would not have bettered the PM's wife's bid. She was found not guilty and Thaksin guilty. No wonder he won't return the charges are political and the courts are being manipulated by the Military. He came into government with great wealth and the freezing of his money was only constitutional for a set period, yet after Thaksin asked for his funds to be unfrozen, which he has every right to demand as he has not been convicted over the money he made (they couldn't get the proof to convict him of that) so the Thai government is holding it illegally. Now you ask why he won't return to be jailed for something the court said his wife was innocent of (she was found not to have used her husbands position to buy the land) yet he has been found guilt of using his position for her to buy the land! Wake up Thailand, the military and the Democrats are playing you for fools, and the PAD morons showed just how stupid the Thai's can be for fighting to remove Democracy in Thailand to help appoint a leader that the people have voted against 3 times......
There is only one word for in, stupid! Amazing Thailand alright!

SOVENY (Disc.4) the immersion of your reaction says more about you then words can do! What is wrong with my suggestion? Let us face the fact that 1.000.000 baht is not enough to save your skin after someone handed over Thaksin to justice.
Khunkachin (Disc.9) is Wright when he warns that the person who reports the “where a bout” of Thaksin will be seen as "betrayer.” This of course only from the point of view of the Red beholders! The current Abhisit government is not ready / willing / allowed to offer a bounty, but a private initiative as the one from Gen Somjate (and a group of unidentified business leaders for a bounty to be paid to anyone who can bring Thaksin to Thailand to face his two-year prison sentence on corruption charges.) is a nice initiative. Of course, this amount is to LOW to get any result. However, if we have a public account from which we publish the scores daily (barometer) it will bring some “heat” on the fire let us call a positive stimulus. If the level rises daily then this will be also an UN-popularity indicator for Thaksin. Moreover, I prefer this clear warning signal above a real BATTLE between)RED-shirts & Yellow/Blue shirts (Let us not forget we speak in all cases about Thai's!).
    Towards BOB (Disc. 10)
The Red shirts are now trying to get the Army involved (coup). Now suddenly RED wants a coup, because this will also mean NEW ELECTIONS. Mr. Toxic Thaksin believes that FAST elections will bring him better results. So NOW he (including SAMAK / SOMCHAI) lost his POWERBASE (being the government) THAKSIN suddenly is in a hurry to get elections because his popularity is sinking.) I prefer to have Abhisit longer in power and give the current government = time (publicity/TV-broadcast) to undo the brainwashing of former state manipulated NBT programs). Most reds are not bad people they only have been brainwashed and manipulated by NBT and Thaksin and his gang. Give Abhisit some time and awareness among the Red will rise that Thaksin has not been honest towards them.
SO back to my (Neighbor's Disc.3) remarks. A public bank account combined with a barometer would be a clear warning signal for Thaksin that he should stop his dirty politics. I am aware that Thaksin's bank account is most likely still HUGE and he can oppose the same. But this BOUNTY idea with filled with for example $5.000.000 may influence a pilot, to make a "emergency" landing in a country or on a spot from which they can and will extradite Toxin Thaksin, or give a bodyguard, a maid or a secretary the little push to inform justice about Thaksins where and abouts. This way Thaksin will become even more paranoid. He will not trust anyone anymore and be become isolated. If Thaksin would be "silenced" in this peaceful way, I would be satisfied to. Then he can enjoy his time abroad and Thailand can prosper again. It is Thaksin himself to blame what occurred to him. I only want him from the "stage" and get a smiling Thailand again.
What the Yellow did was needed (except the airport closures). Everyone should stop harming the prosperity of the Thais. And it is Thaksin who always try's to gain private benefit over the backs of others. If Thaksin returns we'll live in a (corrupted) police-state under dictator- and censorship.

Seriously, 1 million baht? 1 million dollars, 1 billion dollars it may be. still, the fact is that whoever claims that bounty is in hot water for the rest of his short life in my honest opinion. No amount of money will persuade the sensible mind to even attempt thinking out a way to do what has been suggested.

Now, I'm neutral in this, but the way I see it- It is going to take a Martyr to bring this man back if he does not choose to return on his own free will. He should not be above the law, but not like he's the only corruption case in the land of smiles. He actually has done good for the people, but screwed them over as well.

No one alive can always be an angel, it's up to us to weigh out the differences. Rallying, protesting, killing... seriously, Thinking is all that it takes.

    Peace to the people!

I think it is a bad idea to put the bounty on Mr. Thaksin. If the government is unable to do the easily job to capture Mr. Thaksin and don't know how to solve the domestric conflict peacefuly. It means that there is very weak leadership, indevisive and unvisionary government. The Prime Minister and his administration should resign,The one who is rhe leader must be intelligence with ihe wisdoms and govern the country with loving-kindness and compassion with the wisdom, having the vision to create the prosperity, harmony and peace, doing the right thing for the benifit to Thai people and country. The leader must be moral and ethical man or woman.GOD BLESS THAILAND.

PAD anti-government, why they are still free for so many year. Time is passing by, so the game could change, why we need a law? As long as you're in power, you are right. The dog is with tail, and the tail is the show now.
