Carradine family upset by Thailand

The family of the late actor David Carradine have launched strong anti-Thailand criticism touched off by the death of the TV and movie star.

They are "profoundly disturbed" by publication of a forensics photo in a Bangkok newspaper, claim that the Thai pathologist is incompetent, want to go around the Thai police with FBI investigators - and threaten to sue any Thai media printing additional photos of Carradine after his death.

US authorities have not answered the family's demands for help from the FBI and an independent pathologist - at least officially.

But Thai authorities have been restrained in their reaction.

"I am confident we are working on the right track," Pol Col Somprasong Yenthaum, who is leading the probe, told the French news agency AFP.

"US embassy representatives saw every step of the investigation process in the hotel room."

He said Carradine's relatives had the right to seek help from the FBI, but added that the bureau would have to contact Thailand's attorney general who would then decide whether to forward the request to the police.

"We can work with FBI if they request and their request is passed. But if they don't come, we can do our jobs," he added.

Chief forensic investigator on the case is Thailand's chief pathologist, Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand, who is director of the Forensic Science Institute. She is well known internationally, and considered a highly credible state official.

Her initial autopsy report revealed that the actor died from a sudden lack of oxygen and his body showed no signs of struggle. She has promised a final report on Carradine's death in three to four weeks.

Carradine's brother Keith has filed reports with the FBI that could lead to the agency's involvement, said Mark Geragos, attorney for the "Kung Fu" actor's half-brother. The FBI confirmed that Carradine's family had contacted the agency.

The body of the dead actor has been sent to the US after the Thai autopsy. The actor's family said they hope the body will arrive in Los Angeles by Monday.

The family will also seek an independent autopsy by famed US forensic pathologist Dr Michael Baden to determine whether another person could have been involved,

A chambermaid found Carradine's body Thursday in a closet in his room at the Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel. Thai authorities said they have all but ruled out foul play, based on surveillance footage and interviews with hotel staff that indicate no one was in Carradine's room before he died, said Pol Col Somprasong.

It has been widely speculated that the actor accidentally asphyxiated himself while involved in masturbation.

A grainy photo published on the Saturday front page of Thai Rath newspaper shows a naked body suspended from a clothes bar in a hotel closet, hands apparently bound together above the head and feet on the floor. The face is blacked out and other areas are obscured.

The paper did not indicate the source of the image, but Thai police said they believed it was a picture of Carradine's body taken by a forensics team.

Keith Carradine said in a statement that the family was "profoundly disturbed by the release in Thailand of photographs taken at the scene of David Carradine's death," and threatened legal action against further distribution.

    Equa:

Ha! You have obviously been educated in Thailand and read the sanitised version of Thai history as dictated by the nationalist elite. Thailand or Siam never occupied by a foreign power? That's not just completely wrong. It's absolutely ridiculous. And unlike Mike, I'm not just talking about the Japanese. Do some independent reaearch. You will be surprised at how much you have been kept in the dark.

Kang, please don't ever go anywhere except Thailand. After all, there may be something you don't like. Then what will you do? Do you live in Bangkok? Don't go up-country and complain about something. It's not allowed.. Which part of Bangkok? Please stat in your own Tambon. Etc Etc.
You are a xenophobic idiot. The kind we have to expect in Thailand.

Sorry, just re-read the article, this time the hands were apparently tied over his head not behind his back as stated earlier in the press.
Still even a kung-fu expert would find this set-up unpractical for self-masturbation...
    Something stinks, dear Watson.
RIP Carradine, we will miss you.

Mr Kang, asking discontent foreigners to leave Thailand is no solution. Try to imagine what that would do to Thailand, specially if other countries asked Thais living there to leave countries. We should rather try to find a solution all can be content with.

Two points here. I don't think the unfortunate victim had any intention of committing suicide, he was carrying out an act of ill-considered self-abuse which unfortunately went wrong. His choice do this in private is his own but the consequences of it reaching the public domain are of no concern to him after death. If he had concerns that this would cause family embarassment he probably would have considered it before entering the wardrobe. It is my opinion that anyone who doesn't consider this is either selfish or does not mind the media frenzy that would follow after death. Mr Carradines reputation, lifestyle and oriental hippy mystic image all suggest he had no concerns for his mortal remains so in my opinion he is fair game for the press. Whether there is a moral obligation for the press to exercise restraint out of respect for living family members is a different matter. However in the case of an assault or murder of victim, such as those seen in south Thailand recently respect for the dead and the grieving relatives should most certainly be exercised. The simple litmus test is empathic. Every editor/photographer should question how they would feel if the victim was themselves or a member of their own family. This lack of empathy should in turn cause reflection by anyone who chooses to buy their product. I fear such awareness and consideration is becoming extinct in the national consciuosness however.

Blah blah blah, Americans are great, they are saints, their superior, their this and that, bravo! Mind you that at present there are a lot of crimes not solve in the US with all the "superior" technology and detectives. So, why in all this years, they can not find Bin Laden? If all the "farangs" don't like or have all the comments on people and the law here in Thailand, why come? Why stay? Why Work? Why have fun? Why marry or vacation here in Thailand? If you do not stay here for 15+ years and you do not know Thailand at all. This is the only country that was not occupied by any foreign country. Thai press learned their "marketing" knowledge from where? Superior foreign press, which are very open and no privacy at all! Every country is the same, so let us leave it that way, there are good and bad points.
