PAD demands better security for its leaders

Backers don't plan rally over attack on Sondhi

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) yesterday called on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to offer better protection to its leaders just hours after top PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul narrowly survived an assassination attempt.

This photo from Mr Sondhi's Manager newspaper shows the PAD founder in hospital with a skull wound.

The alliance, however, assured that it would not call a mass rally in response to the attack.

PAD member Somkiat Pongpaiboon said the pre-dawn ambush which involved heavy weapons raised questions about the efficiency of those providing security. The assault took place despite the capital being under a state of emergency.

"How could heavy weapons get through troops and police who were deployed at every intersection? How could surveillance cameras in the area be out of order?

"This means the state mechanisms failed completely," he said.

The PAD demanded replacements of the national police chief, the director of the National Intelligence Agency and the director of the Armed Forces Security Centre.

"In short, we demand changes to those responsible for security affairs. If not, the lives of the prime minister and the cabinet ministers would also be in danger," he said.

The PAD suspects the attempt on Mr Sondhi's life was politically motivated and intended to steer the country into anarchy.

PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila said the attempt to cut down Mr Sondhi was related to his relentless campaign against the Thaksin regime which eventually culminated in its downfall.

He said the PAD refused to pinpoint the mastermind but believed the shooting was the work of men in uniform.

He called on the prime minister to take decisive steps and ensure a transparent police investigation into the case.

The PAD yesterday appealed to its supporters to remain calm and said its planned political rallies in the provinces would take place as scheduled.

Chaiwat Sinsuwong, a PAD ally, doubted the attempt on Mr Sondhi's life was the work of the red shirts.

He said he suspected that men in uniform carried out the attack but there was a question as to who was the one who issued the order to silence Mr Sondhi.

"Don't call them pros because it will only mislead the public into thinking the assailants were hired gunmen. They should be called weapons specialists," he said.

He also echoed the PAD's demands that some security-related positions needed new faces.

Army specialist Khattiya "Seh Daeng" Sawasdipol said those involved in Mr Sondhi's attack must have strong political clout.

"Hired gunmen would not take the job because Mr Sondhi is a high-profile person. Those who accepted the job must have strong back-up."

Maj-Gen Khattiya, a self-professed PAD opponent, declined to analyse who would gain from Mr Sondhi's death, saying Mr Sondhi had a lot of enemies and would probably know who were the people behind the attack.

    Dear Mr. democrab
Yes these things still happened even if it was a state of emergency I don't think Mr. Sondhi did know about that didn't he but if they were wearing a red-shirt then I think he will know about it no doubt.I don't think Mr. Sondhi wanted somebody to shoot him in the head how about you do you want somebody to shoot at your head.

democrab: I agree with you on the inability to improve the safety for Thai people by the government. However, I do not agree on faking the assasination. If you could fake it, just show us how you would like to put yourself in a car and have someone fire 100 bullets at you. This is not easy to fake. Please do not post a non-sense comment like this again. It's just an insult to our intelligence, democrab!!!

That shows that Sondhi has a very strong guru protecting him as he's still alive even with 100 bullets sprayed into his car but this also shows clearly that the Thai society fabric has now totally ruptured and there's no way even 5-10 years down the road, Thailand can resolve this social issue. And imagine what would happen --worse things to come-- when the Thais no longer benefit from this highest institution umbrella protection?

You need to get your head examined if you think Sondhi planned this. He has a bullet wound to the skull. Nobody goes around planning to get shot (in the head) for show. This isn't a movie. Use your brain.

Why is he not dead? Incompetent or inexperienced gunmen is much more logical.

The PAD wants protection from the government? Haven't they already had enough protection from them? I would think that's kind of obvious since last years situations.
PAD needs to grow up and face up to their responsibilities. If you want to start trouble, you need to be ready to accept the consequences or learn how to dela with problems in a more peaceful responsible manner.
There is no way that a group who has embarrassed this country, set back an already tumbling economy and driven tourism and the "face" of this country back into the stone ages, be given any special protection! Never!
I am not a Sondhi fan, but I hope Mr. Sondhi does recover soon. It has nothing to do with his political affilication, but the fact is he is a human being and not deserving of an assasination, no matter how badly you may think of him.

    @Bubba

A PAD leader gets nearly killed and u blame the PAD? U can t be serious... Its a mirracle that he survived. For publicity one shot would have been enough dont u think?

    @democrab

He wasnt under governmental protection. Do u blame Obama for every shooting that happens in the states?

I really hope the thai people start to understand that an unstable government is bad for all thais and for the country itself. The people should act constructiv together to help their country out of this mess.

Isn't it pretty obvious that the attack was from the anti-Abhisit government section, or basically the red shirts, who were now simply in denial because the same actions imposed on the red shirts were not similary to the yellow shirts? It is pretty obvious that the UDD now are just acting out in random pointless acts of violence towards the PAD, which clearly shows the difference between these two groups.
I think the last thing anyone would do would be to fake their own assassination. What would it do anyways? The public already has harsh opinions of the red shirts, and this only confirms what they think of them. In no way does this demoralize any of the PAD or the government, or does it encourage the public to side with the yellow or red shirts.
As said earlier, this is simply an act of barbarism hoping to create as much damage to this country as possible, for 'democracy'.
I don't think I've heard anything more far fetched than that.
These people should learn to love their country.

Lucky for Sondhi Lim that those gunmen who sprayed bullets all over his car were not "professional." These were a bunch of amateurs who left a big mess all over the place without accomphishing their objective. Professional hitman is always precise and deadly accurate, two direct shots to the head from a well-concealed handgun. It was a lucky day for Sondhi Lim and a bad day for whoever gave the order to end his life. If the report was accurate about two unexploded M-79 shells found at the scene. These bunch couldn't really shoot straight. M-79 has a minimum range of 25 meters and the shell has to rotate 25 times in order to arm itself. However, a hundred rounds fired from multiple automatic assault rifles and no dead bodies was nothing short of God's miracle! I wish Sondhi Lim and his driver a quick and full recovery.
