Thaksin arrives in Cambodia

Fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra arrived in Cambodia on Tuesday morning to carry out his new role as economic adviser to the government, the Cambodian government said.

Cambodia announced Thaksin's appointment last week, sparking a dispute that has led Thailand and Cambodia to recall their respective ambassadors and has deepened tensions after a series of deadly border clashes in the past year.

Thailand has also said it could seal the frontier if Thaksin is not extradited, but Cambodian ministry of foreign affairs spokesman Kuoy Kong said his country was "not concerned about these issues".

"We will not extradite him (Thaksin). We already clarified this case because he is a political victim,'' Kuoy Kong said on Tuesday.

Thaksin is living in foreign locations including Dubai to avoid a two-year jail term for conflict of interest while prime minister handed down by the Supreme Court in September 2008. He sksipped bail before the veredict was announced.

He justified his trip to Cambodia -- whose prime minister Hun Sen is a close friend and political ally -- in an open letter published on his website late Monday.

"I am not helping Cambodia to compete with Thailand. I will never do things to hurt my country no matter how badly I disagree with the government," he said.

Thaksin, the former owner of Manchester City football club, was due to give a a speech to hundreds of Cambodian economics experts in the capital on Thursday. He has not said how long he will be in Phnom Penh.

Thaksin won two elections and remains a massively influential figure in Thai politics, stirring up mass protests by so-called "Red Shirt" supporters against the current government.

His presence on Thailand's doorstep is the closest he has come since he last fled the country in August 2008.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said the government has already given instructions to begin seeking the extradition of Thaksin from Cambodia.

Mr Abhisit was speaking after receiving confirmation that the fugitive politician had arrived at Phnom Penh airport this morning.

He admitted it would be difficult since Thaksin's exact whereabouts were not known, and particularly so if the former prime minister made only brief visits.

The prime minister called on the Cambodian government to think again why so many things that have caused Thai-Cambodian relations to deteriorate happened during the past two weeks.

Mr Abhisit also threatened to review the two countries' extradition treaty if Cambodia fails to comply.

"Cambodia must realise that they have triggered a conflict of interest and criticised the Thai judicial system," he told reporters.

Thai government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said the cabinet had also agreed to cancel an oil and gas exploration deal with Cambodia that was signed during Thaksin's time in power.

Mr Abhisit stressed that the cabinet decision to revoke a memorandum of understading with Cambodia involved only the disputed maritime boundery area, not the disputed border area surrounding Phreah Vihear temple.

I completely agree with Discussion 26. I would love to see Mr. Kasit as the Prime Minister de jure not de facot like at this time. Mr. Suthep appears to loose ground in favor of his foreign minister.

Seems to me its game, set and match to Hun Sen. He has put the Thai government in an impossible situation with the appointment of Thaksin. What can they do? Ignore him as some have suggested well they can try but there is no way he is going away anytime soon. Strongarm stuff? As in a snatch squad I can't see it personally but it would bring matters to a head get it over and done with so to speak. Thaksin wants his old job back along with the money and power that goes with it at the moment he is making a laughing stock of the Thai government. Just look at him a wanted criminal a fugitive from justice on the run but can go more aor less anywhere he wants. I want him in the cell they have waiting for him.

Thailand and Cambodia deserve to live in peaceful brotherhood neighbor, friendship, not an enemy.
The ongoing of the conflict might be one day escalate into war. The World and especially ASEAN cannot afford another Middle East war style. It is not going to be like what the Army General told the Bangkok Post that "if the war broke up we will win". If I were the reporter, I would asked him, how long it take him to win a war with Cambodia, how many Thai soldiers need to scarify their lives, and how many civilian need to move from their homes or die, how much money need to fund the war if the war is going to take month, year or decades. What happen if another neighbors take part into the conflict, well let say Vietnam and Lao take part with Cambodia because they are the member of Indochina countries and they have responsibility to protect each others. Myanmar and Malaysia are absolutely not going to take part with Thai because Thai has never been in good relationship to them either.
Is it time Thailand should ask themselves that do we need to look into our international policies, and need to reform or need to have or train a right person to in charge of international affair . Amazingly Kasit Phirumya, a person who uses to insult a neighbor leader, has been chose to be the only right candidate to handle the very important position. The current move of the Thai government dealing with neighbor exemplify that Kasit is the incompetent foreign minister ever in Thai history.

Culturally thailand borrow alot from cambodia right down to the rurual houses they built. While cambodia suffered the genocide in the 70's, they are late in development stage. Cambodia could be thailand 40 years ago so it will be easy for thaksin to mold cambodia into a developing country and pull in investments like he did while he was PM. Alot of foreign investors would start pouring in, buying up land, built hotels and you could eventually find little bangkok or pattaya in cambodia. I doubt businessmen all over the world would listern to abhisit government and stop doing business with cambodia, they are there for the sole purpose to make money not to do your childish pet project. So expect cambodia to challenge thailand in many areas just like Vietnam becoming world number 2 rice exporter and world largest coffee exporter. Thailand has nothing to gain from this silly 3 years old goose chase.
