PM wants Cambodia to revise stance

The Thai-Cambodian dispute will end if Cambodia revises its position towards the Thai government, according to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

"If the Cambodian government adjusts its stance, the problems between the two countries will be resolved," Mr Abhisit said in his weekly broadcast on Sunday while attending the Apec summit in Singapore.

"Thailand, as the Asean chair, will not let the Thai-Cambodian issues affect other trading partners and I would like Thai people to be patient and show their sincerity by being good neighbours while protecting their national interest."

He insisted his government did not start the problem, as ties between the two countries were smooth before the Cambodian government appointed ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as its advisor and refused to extradite him.

The government had used diplomatic measures to counter Cambodia, but it did not want the problems to exacerbate, he said.

The revision to revoke the maritime agreement with Cambodia was constitutional and it had to pass the parliament's approval, he said. The Foreign Ministry had been assigned to look into all the related laws.

On domestic affairs, he said the government had three main tasks: to reform the rail operation, to resolve the Map Ta Phut impasse and to eradicate narcotics nationwide.

He said the government will urgently solve the dispute between the State Railway of Thailand's management and labour union, while ensuring the safety of train passengers.

The economic ministers on Wednesday approved a budget of 100 billion baht to reform the rail operation by improving its services, products and personnel.

"The government wants the trains to run at a speed of 100 to 120 kilometres per hour. A dual gauge system will be used and rail services will expand to neighbouring countries. The management system will be enhanced and divided to support new projects in the future."

Mr Abhisit said a four-party committee, chaired by former prime minister Anand Panyarachun, had been form to seek short- and long-term solutions for Map Ta Phut, after the Administrative Court passed a ruling to temporarily suspend 76 industrial projects at Thailand's largest industrial estate in Rayong.

"The problems will be divided into 16 projects and the tasks must be achieved within 60 days. They are expected to start next week," he said.

The premier said the measures to suppress drug trafficking along the border areas will be more stringent, and officials will work more closely with communities to prevent illegal drugs from spreading.

As an exPM, t ought to be ashamed. he is still pulling the strings in the opposition part pt. he is met by the party members so, red shirts, wake up, your land will one day belong to other country cos the very person you worship is not with you!!! t knows too much about thai projects and what's happening in your own land to another country. accusing/arresting an engineer is just to make the poor uneducated people think that he has friends to protect him. he's like god who knows who is harming him. but actually he's harming himself more. don't be foolish. thai people must not fall into his $ trap.

@Sunnyjim: Yes I agree... just to add some..those maps were also approved by both Thai and Cambodia. That why Cambodia always use that map to negotiate with Thai...But Thai government always use its own map to negotiate with us...we have been patient enough over that negotiation. We always tear to feed everything that we have discussed.. I think it is time for use to shout..Thai government want bilateral talk but they never show any progress. Cambodian government also doesn't want to go for International negotiation but if we wish to do that we will win for sure... Let's be a nice neighboring country...stop thinking about invading each other at this 21th century..... I got so many Thai friends. They want to visit Cambodia and I also want to visit Thai..When this thing happen, all of the plans are terminated. Historically, Cambodia and Thai got a lot of problem with each other.. Why now we repeat this history? Just let history be experience and let us be peaceful.... I, myself wish to see Asean like EU but look like impossible cuz almost nations here got problem with each other...Let's Pray for Peace...em Thank Bangkokpost to allow my comment to be displayed!

Re: RHIN - I think you are correct ...except that you assume that because the UN approves a map, which you write "we put at UN." Thailand MUST accept it as well.

By your logic. If the UN approved a map giving Thailand part of Cambodia say Siem Reap Cambodians would accept it, because the UN approved it??. That i doubt sincerely.

Irrespective of whether the UN approves a map or not it is down to the Thai and Cambodian people and their leaders to be objective and put down the flags of their nations and talk, openly, honestly and truthfully, whilst being respectful of all aspects of the internal politics of either country, irrespective of personal interest.

Until this happens nothing will change, and for all Cambodia s posturing, it can ill afford a war with Thailand - It would financially cripple the country as Cambodia would no doubt have to borrow large amounts of money to fund a war.

When people talk anything is possible - Look at Northern Ireland

Everything that happended was because of the greedy Thai government action. Thailand is the one that needs to change its stance with Cambodia. It is all about Preah Vihear temple. Please understand that Preah Vihear temple is belong to Cambodia, and the land around it is belong to Cambodia too. The map that was used in ICJ in Hague is clearly shown that the 4.60km square is within Cambodia. Please remove your soldiers then Cambodia will be happy with the Thai government again.

Ok the drug eradication I understand, but the other 2 tasks to me is all about MONEY! The other 2 tasks should be dealt with after solving the unrest in the south. As everyone can see Abby's government doesn't care about the people killed or injured everyday. This problem in the south should have priority even over the problems with Cambodia.

It look like Mr.Abisit is trying to act cool.
If you want to end the problem, you must stop invading my country. Why you, Mr.Abisit say If Cambodia want to end the problem, Thai must withdraw the troop from Preah Vihear and accept to use the Map that we put at UN?? Bangkok post never allow my comment to display...

Mr. Abhisit, you are not telling the truth.

There were two deadly miliatary clashes near the Preah Vihear temple when Thai troops harrassed and intruded into Cambodian territory, how could you say that the relationship between the two countries were "smooth"before the appointment of Mr. Thaksin as an Economic Advisor?

The stance Prime Minister Hun Sen has taken with Thailand over his eternal friend, The fugitive billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra is plainly obvious and after the past week of PR trickery during the run-up to the Apec summit everyone must be fed up of hearing about it. PM Hun Sen's personal feelings about his eternal friend have basically dictated the Cambodian Governments position.
