The explosion at the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) rally in Sanam Luang on Sunday was caused by a grenade launched from the City Pillar Shrine, Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Vorapong Chiewpreecha said on Monday.

The explosion took place behind the stage at around 9pm, injuring 12 people. The grenade damaged two cars and created a hole approximately eight metres wide.

Pol Lt-Gen Vorapong said it was clear the attacker launched the grenade with the M79 launcher from the City Pillar Shrine near Lod Canal, or about 350 metres away from the yellow-shirt gathering. The grenade's trajectory indicated that it could not be thrown by a person from a close distance.

The police could not yet conclude if the attacker had the intention to kill, he said.

He said the police could not identify the attacker yet but will pinpoint the exact location where the grenade was launched.

The police will find further witnesses and evidence, as the closed-circuit television tapes around Sanam Luang did not provide any new information.

The M79 can be used to fire many different types of munitions it was first used during the Vietnam war to fire 40mm shells.(also from Wickipedia) Given the damage done it clearly was not a CS or sponge round. Anything that can make an 8metre diameter hole, damage 2 cars and injure 12 people strikes me as being quite lethal.

    - "The explosion took place behind the stage at around 9pm, injuring 12 people. The grenade damaged two cars and created a hole approximately eight metres wide."

ah...that would be one very big firecracker?

    - "the attacker launched the grenade with the M79 launcher from the City Pillar Shrine near Lod Canal, or about 350 metres away from the yellow-shirt gathering. The grenade's trajectory indicated that it could not be thrown by a person from a close distance."

ah...yesterday they said they had arrested "the guy" who had driven past on a motorcycle and thrown the "firecracker"?

MMOUSE: Actually, considering the way WAYNE writes...that could well be a marine...

    (sorry, I couldn't resist that)

here is a copy from wikipedia
The M79 has been used extensively also for crowd control purposes where it is desirable to have a weapon dedicated solely to less-lethal force. The three common less-lethal rounds are the M651 CS gas, the M1006 sponge grenade, and the M1029 Crowd Dispersal rounds.

check it before make noise without fact wayne is correct.

discussion 3 I doubt your real name is Wayne as your written English is terrible for a native and has many Thai type mistakes.
Maybe you're trying to mislead people do you know something about this?

So of course there's no military involvement because we all know that loads of people have M79 grenade launchers at home.

Ridiculous statement on intent to kill or not as if there's a whole lot of difference in this case; it was a grenade and no matter how you cut it, the shooter knew that it might kill or wound people--perhaps resulting in permanent disability. His intention was vile all the same, and any retort that it wasn't intended to kill would bring the house down with laughter, as it was fired into a crowd, and such grenades did kill several in Government House last year.

Don't have to be an Einstein to deduce who was responsible. It's just that the authorities don't have the guts to follow their instincts.

Is this the "giant firecracker" alluded to in another story?

So far as I am aware the M79 is a grenade launcher and not, as the police say, a grenade in itself. It can actually be used to fire a wide range of devices, not all of them lethal. Known as the Wombat it has a very distinctive report when fired. Have the police actually been able to identify the grenade itself?
